Richard Marx has stories to tell in more ways than one. The veteran hit maker recently sat down to share memories about his number 1 hits "Hold On To The Nights," "Right Here Waiting," and "Satisfied" as part of a new video series from Billboard to celebrate reaching 1,000 No. 1 songs on its Hot 100 chart. "I just write songs that I'm proud of, that I like, that I want people to hear," explains Marx, "I've never had the experience of either phoning it in or thinking, 'Ooh I've got a smash here.'" Marx, who has also written hit songs for Keith Urban, N'Sync, and Luther Vandross among others, will further celebrate his legendary career with his upcoming solo release, Stories to Tell, a collection of his greatest hits, acoustic versions, and live tracks that will also include a DVD of Marx's recent performance at the famed Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. The deluxe album, currently available exclusively at Walmart and Richard Marx's online store, will get a wide release on February 7th. It's hard to say that legendary songwriter and musician Richard Marx is back, when he never really left. Since his string of top five hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Marx has written and recorded hit after hit with artists like Josh Groban, N'Sync, Lifehouse, and more, winning a Grammy in 2004 for Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father." His most recent collaboration with Keith Urban led to a number one hit on the Billboard Country charts, "Long Hot Summer."
Now Marx is resurrecting his solo career with the release of The Christmas EP, a five song set of holiday classics like "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," and "Alleluia," plus a new track, "Christmas Spirit," which can already be heard in Hallmark's 2011 Holiday promo spots. This will lead up to the February 7th wide release of Stories To Tell, his new deluxe album featuring acoustic versions and original recordings of his greatest hits.Stories To Tell also includes a live DVD, recorded at the legendary Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. For over 20 years, Richard Marx has consistently and powerfully made his mark on the music industry. His debut single "Don't Mean Nothing" and self-titled debut album kicked off his career as a solo artist in 1987 and went on to sell 3 million copies. His 1989 follow-up CD, “Repeat Offender,” became even more successful, selling over 7 million copies worldwide. He was nominated for Grammy awards 3 times and received an American Music Award nomination for favorite male singer. In 1992, he was awarded Best Selling Adult Contemporary Artist at the Billboard Music awards, and received the International Song of the Year Award at the Australian Music awards for his song, “Hazard.”
In addition to selling over 30 million records, and writing, as of 2007, thirteen #1 songs, he remained a fixture on pop and adult contemporary radio for years, even as he emerged as a top producer working with some of the biggest names in the music business. Among those artists, *NSYNC, Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban, Vince Gill, 98°, Luther Vandross, Kenny Rogers, Sarah Brightman, Lara Fabian, Sister Hazel, The Tubes and SHeDAISY. More recently, he has written and produced records for Leann Rimes, Emerson Drive, Natalie Cole, Keith Urban, Paulina Rubio, Kenny Loggins, Chris Botti, Michael Bolton, Travis Tritt and actor Hugh Jackman. In February 2004, Richard won the Song of the Year Grammy for "Dance With My Father," which he wrote with the late Luther Vandross. As his career began in 1987, Richard immediately got involved with many charitable organizations. By donating the royalties from his 1987 hit single, “Should’ve Known Better,” he helped build a room at the NYU Medical Center where pediatric cancer patients can play while at the hospital. In 1989, he wrote and recorded the song “Children of the Night” about the plight of homeless children on the streets and donated all the song’s royalties to the Children of the Night Foundation, which houses and reforms street kids. To date, the song has raised over $500,000. Additionally, he has performed benefit concerts for many organizations, including the TJ Martell Foundation, Toys For Tots, Make A Wish Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Best Buddies (for mentally challenged children), and the Special Olympics. In 1995, Richard and his band flew to Kitzingen, Germany to perform for US troops stationed there, and he plans performances for the USO in the coming year. Perhaps closest to Richard’s heart is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, whom he aligned with in 2000. He organized what has become an annual benefit concert to raise funds for research to cure the disease. The multi act, all-star concerts have, thus far, raised over $3 million. Richard, his wife, Cynthia, and their 3 sons reside in a suburb of Chicago. |
